Surrender, a state where I give into my darkest thoughts. Crumbled, dragged to the floor.
I used a personal experience to make my work honest. Analyzing a painted diary from a hard time in my life I used the paintings to create garments that visualize my feelings in context and dialogue with the body.
d E S I G N
The garment is divided into two pieces. The hand-knitted dress with draped black jersey in background drags to the floor and seems to almost slip off the shoulder. The neckpiece separated the head from the rest of the body and restricts the ability to see.
p E R F O R M A N C E
Vainergill stepped into a very active dialogue with the garment. It clashed with her physical expression of depression, but that is the inherent nature of the emotional state of surrender: Hindering, restricting and it took a while to learn how to live with it.
d I A R Y
I only used black and green in my most sad moments, either a closed lump or fraying, dissolving edges. Losing myself in undefined edges and being drowned in the overwhelming feeling.
M A T E R I A L
Using the matt watercolour surface as inspiration, two coloured Linnen organza is heavily topstitched resembling loose brush strokes. Wool creates warmth and lures with the promise of comfort.
